Make cozy Mug Rugs and Placemats with the Mochi Linen Quote Panel and Blockheads, Block 39

Let’s get cozy with a hot beverage and a delicious cookie

With Fall peeking around the corner, who doesn’t want to curl up on the sofa under a nice homemade quilt and drink a cup of hot cocoa or flavored tea. We all do, right?

But before we get all cozy, let me ask you this: do you have a lot of scraps? Silly question, I know. Let’s see how we can put those small pieces of your favorite fabric to good use and protect your table along the way.

Let’s make some mug rugs! These lovely miniature placemats are perfect for your mug and a delicious cookie to keep them off your tabletop. This one here is made by my friend Bärbel Ott.

For the centerpiece, Bärbel used her leftover scraps and the quilt-as-you-go-method. She framed it with a Mochi Linen print, about 1 1/4" finished border size, and finally added a binding in blue. The finished mug rug is about 10” x 7”, perfect for your mug and that cookie I mentioned earlier.

The placemats are made a bit differently. Bärbel used 2 of the quotes from the Chill Mochi Linen Quote Panels and framed those with a border of pieced scraps. That border has a 1" finished width.

There is no binding around these placemats. You place front and back pieces, right sides together, and sew around. Don’t forget to leave a little opening, so you can turn everything, and finish with a topstitching. To make it a bit sturdier, you could include a light batting but with the Mochi Linen as the backside, it’s stable enough. And there you have it, 2 placemats about 17" x 13" in size.

Create a set for your own household or sew one for a friend. Who wouldn’t love to get a gift like that?

Bärbel did an excellent job sewing this cute tableware, don’t you think? Go give her some love on Instragam @otticreativ.

FREE QUILT ALONG BLOCKHEADS 2020
BLOCK #39
MAD ABOUT PLAID

This week in Moda’s Quilt Along, we have a block that is designed by another Moda designer, Robin Pickens. Her block is called Mad about Plaid.

A couple of years ago, Moda ran a contest through Spoonflower, a screen printing company for your own fabric designs. Robin was the lucky winner of that contest and ever since she is a Moda designer. She is a lady with an artsy contemporary style who loves large flower prints.

Now that you have your next block for your very own Moda sample quilt, why not show us what you’ve made. We have a great community going, in the Facebook group. You can also find all the free blocks in the files section there that have been shared so far by the designers.

And then there is Instagram. Use the hashtags #modablockheads and #modablockheads3 when you post a photo of your work. And follow the hashtags to get inspired by all the other quilters. Encourage each other and have fun together!

Don't miss the other blockheads involved in this project:
