If you know me for quite a while, you will have noticed that I love minimalism in modern quilts and have it once in a while in my own quilt pattern designs.
With the Christmas lap size quilt THOSE TREES I used just one single pieced block in two sizes and laid the blocks down like a ribbon onto the quilt. The trees are easy to piece and the little star on top is machine appliquéd with a zigzag stitch.

Those Trees Table Runner

You can vary this lap quilt an make a table runner, like the one I am teaching in classes. Just six of the small blocks in a row and a border on the left and right. My sample is about 44" x 20", perfect for a dinner table.

On such a minimalist quilt you get lots of so called negative space. I don't think this space is negative - on the contrary: so much place to show your wonderful quilting.

Christmas Quilt Those Trees by Zen Chic is a modern and minimalist take on an holiday quilt beyond reds and greens.

When I pondered how to quilt mine, I didn't want to stitch over the trees themselves, so I wouldn't disturb the pieced fir. Instead I wanted them to pop up a bit and I stippled around to make the background flat. On the other hand I don't like the stippling all over the quilt, it would become a very stiff blanket. Instead I supported the ribbon character with the stippling and repeated the tree motif as a quilting line in the borders, alternating larger and smaller trees in a row.

I was totally thrilled when I spotted this quilting below of Andrea Munro at Instagram. She has wonderful skills to make a magic background around those trees. Don't you just love the structure and effect of her stitched drawings? Amazing!
