Sew a Cozy Quilt with Moda Basic Fabrics and Blockheads Block 48

Modena - PDF quilt pattern for a cozy lap size quilt by Zen Chic.

Sprinkle in some “Basics” with “Purpose”

Moda has a very interesting project called Basics of the Month. They introduce each month a collection of a dozen fabrics that play very well together. Because these fabrics are basics, that means that they are available to purchase at all times. Moda invites a designer to pick those fabrics and an inspiring project to make.

For December, I’m the host of these Basics of the Month. For my group of fabrics, I chose a couple of colors from my Spotted Blender collection. I combined them with some fabrics from my low volumes pallet, the More Paper collection. In this case, I added mostly the volumes printed on an eggshell or linen colored background.

These fabrics have warm colors and go very well with the warm shades of the Spotted pallet. In this pallet, you find rust, roses, browns, and pinks, plus a little bit of black, which I find very suitable for this season of Fall and Winter. Especially when you wanna have a warm, cozy decorating look in your home.

You can find all the fabrics (defined by their item number here) by doing a Google search to try to find them at a shop near you. Or you can order them from any online shop that has them in their collection. Usually, Fat Quarter Shop carries most of the Moda available fabrics, so there is a good chance you’ll find them there.

As far as the pattern, I picked a beginner-friendly pattern for you. I wrote out the instructions, nice and clear, and you can find the pattern, called Modena in my shop to purchase.

This pattern is a lap-size quilt but of course, you can enlarge it. Should you want to make the same size as I did, then you need ⅜ yard of each of the fabrics I have shown you. Or maybe even a bit more like a fat quarter, I would say.

I hope you will enjoy this pattern and my fabric picks. I would love to see how your quilt turns out.

You can always go back and make the blocks even after the Quilt Along is finished. Just follow our tag Blockhead 2020 and you can find all the blog posts with the links to the patterns at your fingertips.

If you’re eagerly awaiting the next one, we present Lisa Bongean’s last block for Blockheads3. She called her block Purpose.

We could imagine Lisa being a purposeful lady. When you visit her blog these days, you see that she decorated her blog in Christmas spirits. I bet her house is wonderfully decorated as well. It sure is welcoming during the December month. Lisa and a few of her quilting friends have even hosted a Christmas Sew Along. I guess she loves the end-of-year holidays, right?

Moda’s Layer Cake Giveaway

And with end-of-the-year come gifts. Moda is playing Santa these weeks and giving away a Layer Cake of the designer of the week. The Layer Cake they give away this week is Lisa’s one from her collection American Gatherings.

All you need to do is hop on over to the Facebook group and look for the question in the announcements Lisa has come up with. Answer that one and cross your fingers. You could be the winner of that Layer Cake!
