3 More New Quilt Patterns & Blockheads 2020 – Block 4

Zen Chic’s Just Red fabric collection brings with it five exciting, dynamic patterns to showcase this versatile new series perfectly.

Three More Ways to Create Something Stunning with Just Red

My newest fabric collection, JUST RED, is in stores – what better way to bring a new series to life than with the perfect patterns to compliment it? In last week’s post I introduced the RED GEESE and PEAKS patterns. Ready for three more?

Introducing Bohemian Spark

BOHEMIAN SPARK is a pattern for the intermediate or more advanced quilter. It makes use of a foundation paper piecing technique and the result is a spectacular effect.

The Bohemian Spark pattern designed for Zen Chic’s newest fabric collection Just Red.

With this pattern it’s crucial to choose the right colors to achieve the best effect. An analog color scheme like the one JUST RED provides is perfect and creates a stunning, harmonious dynamic. The pattern also provides a blank layout so you can use your own color pencils and make a draft on paper of how you’d like to arrange your colors. This way, you can experiment with the right color dynamics before you start sewing!

A fat quarter bundle is best for this pattern as it gives you a good variety of different fabrics in the right amounts for all those irregular triangle shapes. The BOHEMIAN SPARK quilt you see below was quilted by Rachel Hauser, who also helps with editing my patterns. You can see and read more about her process with quilting this quilt in her blog, Stitched in Color.

And Next… Equalizer

The second quilt pattern I have to share with you is EQUALIZER. This pattern is easy to sew, and while it requires a specific design skill you can just copy mine to keep things simple. EQUALIZER is a rhythm of light and dark, narrow and wider strips that look like an actual equalizer. Again, this quilt is not difficult to sew and by just adding the strips you build a volume of lighter and darker color effects.

And Finally, Rising

The third pattern I bring you, RISING, is also easy to sew and is a beginner quilt. This pattern makes use of fused-on machine appliqué – fuse your fabrics to the background and then use a machine appliqué technique. The gradient in this playful quilt from dark to light was inspired but the rising sun, and so i’ve named it RISING.

The Rising pattern from Zen Chic for the Just Red fabric collection is a great beginner quilt.

FREE QUILT ALONG BLOCKHEADS 2020
BLOCK #4
BIRDHOUSE

A few weeks ago I announced the exciting news that Moda Blockheads is back with Blockheads 2020. BlockHeads 2 was so much fun and we saw so many people get involved in the Facebook community and on Instagram (be sure to use the hashtags #modablockheads and #modablockheads3 to share your blocks!). So, let’s do it again – a fun, free, year-long sew along!

I shared a little bit about my layout a few weeks ago – if you’re following along be sure to check out that post to find out what fabrics you’ll need.

This week’s block, Birdhouse, is brought to us by Jan Patek. Jan has been a Moda designer for many years. Her speciality is traditional appliqué, and she designed this block using that technique. You can choose modern fabrics with this traditional style – the simple style of the design integrated with modern fabrics gives the complete block a modern look
