A Big Announcement and a Free Pattern - Adjustable Apron with Zen Chic's Mochi Linen

Zen Chic’s Mochi Linen is a fabulous choice for this stylish and useful adjustable apron sewn with a free pattern from Purl Soho.

Cook up something amazing with Mochi Linen and a free pattern!

Like sewing, time spent in the kitchen is a wonderful way to express inspiration and creativity. Why not do it with fun, functional style in an adjustable apron like this one?

If you’ve been following along with some of our recent projects, like these pencil pouches or this fantastic fanny pack then you know that Mochi Linen from the BREEZE collection is perfect for all kinds of creations! Its stiffer, thicker texture gives it a fabulous feel and is so versatile for a variety of fun and unique projects. The soothing sand hue of Mochi Linen is a beautiful background for naturally harmonious colors like a crisp white, cool blues and an earthy mustard.

Add style and flair to your kitchen time with this adjustable apron made with a free pattern from Purl Soho and Zen Chic’s Mochi Linen.

Mochi Linen is also a great choice for something like this kitchen apron which will likely get messy and need frequent washing – it will definitely stand up to the wear and tear that any good kitchen apron should go through!

For this fun and chic apron I used the blue Fine Lines print from the Mochi Linen Breeze collection and the Stitched print in French Blue. I also used this print for the apron strings, which makes it adjustable to fit all sizes.

This apron also makes a nice gift for men. With the barbecue season coming up, what better way to encourage your favorite outdoor chef to whip up something on the grill than to sew him his own unique apron!

You can even try out my favorite grilled salmon recipe for your next barbecue gathering…

Here’s the recipe!

A sturdy, thicker texture makes Zen Chic’s Mochi Linen a great choice for a project like this adjustable apron.

Now on to my promise…

A big announcement

is coming… YEAH!!!

Starting this month we will have a new sampler quilt for a year of sewing fun. If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’re already familiar with this project – I was a contributor for Blockheads 2.

If you’re new around here – this is a project created by Moda, my fabric manufacturer. Nearly twenty Moda designers will be part of this project and every week we will present a new quilt block plus detailed instructions for FREE, so you can sew along with us to build a most wonderful sampler quilt by the end.

Every week a different Moda designer will be your host and provide you with the download for your weekly block’s FREE instructions. This way, you will learn a lot about our gang, find tons of inspiration and maybe learn something personal, like some trivia about our lives here and there :-)

This is Zen Chic’s suggested layout for the free Moda Blockheads 3 sew along.

The blocks can be made with your fabric choices, and the instructions will give you all details for three different block sizes to make. So you can decide whether you wanna go small or big!

As designers we’re not only allowed, but even encouraged to inspire you with this project with our own style. Meaning – if you are a raving Zen Chic fan and follow my style, I will have a beautiful layout created for you which you can make your own. Of course, at this point I can’t reveal the complete thing, but I can give you some hints of what my quilt will become.

  • I will use 6” blocks (throughout the complete quilt).

  • My layout will end up in an 80” square large quilt.

  • I will use only my basic fabrics (blenders and low volumes) so you can purchase the exact same ones over a long period of time.

…. and above is a clue of the finished quilt. As you can see, I will use the effect of a color wheel and have a centered diamond placed on a square background. The blocks will be sewn with colors matching the color wheel I placed behind. So the first block could be a mixture of yellows and the second one has already some tangerines mixed with the yellow. In this manner I will design all the blocks to create that color gradient impression.

Now, if you like this idea and want to follow along, you may be wondering which fabrics you will need…

My advice would be: Buy a Fat Eighth Bundle of Moda SPOTTED by Zen Chic and one of SPOTTED 2019 by Zen Chic (an addition to have a wider color range). Both of these bundles make for a total yardage of 7 1/2 yards and give you such a great range to choose from. The bundles contain neutrals, greys and blacks too (which you can always use for other projects, since they are just timeless and very versatile). If you want to leave those out, you can buy just Fat Quarters of the rainbow colors in SPOTTED and SPOTTED 2019 (don’t leave the pastels out, they give you the needed contrast to make a block pop).

The Spotted blenders by Zen Chic for Moda have a wonderful bright color range for all kind of projects, timeless and versatile.

In addition to the colored blenders I will use a bit of low volumes, so the blocks next to the negative light space can be faded out a bit by bringing in light fabrics. For these I recommend (of course) my beloved Modern Background low volumes. I think 8 different FQs should be good enough.

Modern Background Paper by Zen Chic for Moda are THE go-to fabrics when it comes to low volumes.

I already hear you asking –

Where can I buy these fabrics? Do you offer bundles?

Sorry, I don’t offer bundles. As I’m located in Germany I can’t offer this extra for our project. BUT… the good news is, that most of the shops carrying Moda also have their basic fabrics, and SPOTTED and PAPER are basics that are available all the time. So my advice would be to find a shop through Google or my list of stockists and order what you need, so that you are prepared for our tataaaaaa…

START next week, 15th of January

When we will present the first block including sewing instructions.

Are you eager to sew along? After all the beautiful projects last time, I can’t wait to see your work in this Blockhead 3 round!
