Here we are at Block 23 for our Moda Blockheads year-long quilt along already, can you believe it? I’m so enjoying seeing all the wonderful interpretations of the block designs that have been shared so far as well as the unique sampler quilts that are coming together. Whether you’ve joined in on the sewing fun or not, I encourage you to visit our thriving Facebook community (43,000+ members!). It’s a great place to see everyone’s blocks and to get a sense for the amazing community that has formed around Moda Blockheads. And, of course, it’s also a great place to share your own blocks as well! You can also share your blocks – or see what others are up to – on Instagram using the hashtags #modablockheads and #modablockheads3.
If you’re brand new to Blockheads, do know that it’s never too late to join in. To briefly catch you up on what all the fuss is about, each week we share a free block pattern from a Moda designer – for an entire year! You can look through the last several weeks’ blocks here, and you can also check out this post for some recommendations about what fabrics you’ll need to get started creating your own unique sampler quilt. You can also check out Blockheads 2, our last round of Blockheads from 2018 which was a fantastic time of community, inspiration and new friendships.
And now on to one of my favorite parts of Blockheads – sharing the new block design for the week! This week brings us Lucky Penny, by Moda designer Vanessa Goertzen. I love this design from Vanessa because depending on how you place your fabrics, you can make this block look like a little dotted surface. If you follow my idea in a 4-inch size, I’ll admit that if you choose to sew it this size it’s really quite tiny and requires very accurate sewing. But, you can also imagine mine as a 12-inch version and it’s like a jewel! This was a fun block to put together, and I can’t wait to see all the creative ways our wonderful community of sewists interprets it in their own unique style.
