Celebrating CHILL – Free Mini Quilt Pattern and a Huge Discount Pattern Sale

July 9, 2020 Laura Nicholls
Sew this mini quilt using a fun and easy free pattern from Zen Chic.

Sew this mini quilt using a fun and easy free pattern from Zen Chic.

Two Wonderful Ways to Celebrate

You may have seen my home tour on YouTube, where I got to talk about my newest fabric collection CHILL and give you a tour of my home and work space. Here’s another video for you – a free mini quilt pattern featuring the new Chill fabrics.

Download the print version of the free pattern here

This is a small project – it’s only about 20x20 inches. It’s so much fun to sew because it goes quickly and you can use just a handful of scraps. You can also make use of a Charm Pack and stick with one graded collection which makes your little project even better looking. The materials you’ll need are either a Charm Pack or some 5-inch squares, 3/8 of a yard for the background fabric, 1/8 yard for the binding and then a little backing and batting. You’ll most likely have these around your house so you can get started with this project right away!

To create this mini quilt, lay out combinations of prints to build a cross, and lay out nine different crosses which you can arrange in a way that’s appealing to your eye. Fill in the gaps between these crosses with the background pieces. Join the pieces to form diagonal rows and begin sewing them together. When you’re done, you’ll join those rows to make a square. You can then place the layers together, and can even glue them – it’s such a small project that you can work with glue here.

I quilted my mini quilt with my domestic sewing machine which was easy to do – it took me about an hour and a half to do the whole thing. I then stitched on the binding by hand while I watched my TV show for about an hour. I really enjoyed this little project so much that I made a second one afterwards!

This project is made using my CHILL collection which is currently hitting stores. CHILL is a wintery collection, not specifically Christmassy, but it does bring cold and frosty days to the imagination. CHILL also has a different color scheme – not the typical reds and greens but rather an icy blue, a midnight blue and then a little bit of warmth with a wooden tan tone.

As I showed you already in the latest blog posts I created four patterns for the new collection.

And I’m happy to announce a great pattern discount we will run this weekend, yeah!!!

So to give you just another quick overview of the new patterns, I will summarize these beauties below. The discount is offered for all Zen Chic patterns, whatever you like - pick your favorites.

Mega Star 2

Mega Star 2 is simply a Mega Star – the classic Lone Star quilt design that has been a hit for centuries. I wanted to give mine a modern twist, so I moved the midpoint out of the center towards the golden ratio. Yes – a modern quilter is allowed cut star points!

A Jelly Roll is perfect for the Mega Star pattern so that you can use the entire range of the collection for this scrappy look and can do so at a lower cost. It also saves you cutting time, killing two birds with one stone… that's how we like it!

And Next… Winter Windows

I titled this pattern Winter Windows because it reminds me of window frames through which one can look into the far distance. And, of course because the fabrics used and their cool colors are reminiscent of winter.

This quilt is very easy to sew and immediately gives every beginner a sense of achievement. And by the way, wouldn’t it be a fun idea to sew it with your teenage daughter or granddaughter? You could have the simple blocks put together fairly quickly and look forward to a wonderful project to share. For my Winter Windows quilt I used a layer cake again – my “thing” is to get a great variety of fabrics at a low price!

And here’s Winter Star

The quilt pattern Winter Star – it just looks amazing. At first glance, one thinks of curved lines, but actually these are all just straight seams. This quilt is not a go-to project for a beginner, but if you have a bit of experience you can easily master it.

Winter Star is sewn using the Foundation Paper Piecing method. And hey – it’s not as scary as some might think! I even have an IGTV tutorial for this technique at @zenchicmoda and it’s easy to master.

Look at the beautiful quilting – Rachel Hauser from @stitchedincolor did it for me and I'm thrilled with it.

And finally, Those Trees 2

And last but not least, here comes a new edition of Those Trees. This is a minimalistic quilt with a ribbon of fir trees and a wide negative space which allows for a lot of intricate quilting. This pattern was an absolute hit two years ago and immediately sold out.

So, I decided to reprint it featuring my newest fabric line. It’s so much fun to sew these small fir trees and finally put them together into two ribbons. You’ll instantly want to follow up with a matching table runner or pillow!
