Learn to design your own fabrics and a Giveaway

June 27, 2022 Brigitte Heitland

Do you have cool fabric pattern ideas but can't bring them to life?

Not all of us can be professional designers, but that doesn't mean we can't create our own fabric patterns.

The iPad is a great tool for creating designs and patterns. It's portable, easy to use, and has an awesome screen. And in addition, there is this amazing app ILLUSTRATOR from Adobe (comes with a 7 day free trial), which is a great tool to start your first fabric design. The app allows you to bring in your hand sketches and transform them into vector graphics. You can create your own color schemes, build simple repeats and also export the finished design for various purposes. An Apple Pencil makes it so easy as drawing on paper.

Create simple repeating patterns with the iPad, new Skillshare class with all the know-how!

I'll show you how to take your hand sketches, bring them on your iPad and create a simple and unique repeat that can be turned into a fabric.

I've always been obsessed with fabrics and patterns. When I was young, my granny taught me how to sew my own clothes.

At some time in my life, I stumbled upon patchwork, which means having printed fabrics and then cutting them into pieces and sewing them back together in different ways. This got me hooked at once.

When I started working on my first quilt, I realized that creating prints is much more complex than just repeating any motifs again and again — there are so many variables involved: color schemes, proportion, the scale of the repeat, etc. And as if that wasn't enough, you also have to consider how a final quilt needs a complete spectrum of light to dark fabrics.

Create your own fabric pattern repeats with your iPad. Learn everything you need to know in this Skillshare class taught by Brigitte Heitland.

My goal with this tutorial is to show you how you can easily start to create your own first fabric using your iPad. We will first use our drawing skills to make some simple hand sketches; then we'll capture them onto our iPad; finally, we can import them into Illustrator where we will clean up our sketch and create a vector file that can be used to create a simple repeat. We also talk about creating a color scheme and coloring our repeat. In the end, I'm showing you export options so you can get your design to a fabric printer.

You can finally make an actual fabric from your ideas and sew projects out of them.

The possibilities are endless, and this app seems like the perfect way to get started.

It's not just for fun, though; it's also educational. You can learn how to draw on your iPad in a number of ways and then take those lessons with you to other projects, like greeting cards, posters, wallpaper, and much more.

Find out more about my class at Skillshare now!

I am so excited to invite you to my very first Skillshare class, you can simply start with a 30-day free trial of as well the Skillshare learning platform as the Illustrator app. So if you have an iPad and an Apple Pencil, if your head brims from ideas - then this class is perfect for you!
