It’s not too late for a Christmas quilt (yes, this Christmas)
You know that Christmas quilt you were definitely going to start in August?
The Fat Eighths are still neatly folded. The sewing machine is looking available. And somehow, Christmas is now about eight weeks away.
How very festive of the calendar.
But before you quietly move that project onto next year’s list, let me introduce you to Those Trees. There’s still time to turn that lovely intention into something you can actually curl up under.
A little Scandinavian calm. Without the sewing drama.
Those Trees is a modern Christmas quilt with simple, beginner-friendly piecing and a quiet Scandinavian feel.
An assortment of Fat Eighths, a calm background, and a little sewing time are all you need to get your forest growing. The finished look is clean, cozy, and considered—not “I panic-sewed this while ordering presents.”
Your secret is safe.
The quilt-along is over. The good bits are still here.
We originally stitched Those Trees together as a quilt-along. The group has finished, but the tutorials haven’t gone anywhere.
All five steps are still available to follow for free, and four include video. Start whenever you like, pause when life gets busy, and replay anything you need.
No catching up. No being the person arriving with uncut fabric while everyone else is binding.
Tackle one step a week starting now, and you could have your quilt top ready by the end of November. That leaves December for quilting, binding, and admiring your excellent timing over a cup of tea.
A forest for your sofa—or your table
The finished quilt measures 58" × 71": a lovely size for winter evenings on the sofa.
But perhaps your December calendar already looks like someone lost a game of appointment Tetris.
In that case, meet the table runner.
At approximately 43" × 20", it brings the same little forest to your table with a smaller sewing commitment. The measurements are included in a free bonus PDF on the quilt-along page. You’ll still need the Those Trees pattern for the sewing instructions.
Smaller forest. Equally good taste.
Let your trees have personality. Give them room.
The original quilt uses my Shimmer collection, but your forest doesn’t have to look like mine.
Classic reds and greens? Lovely. Quiet grays and whites? Very chic. A few unexpected bright trees? They’re clearly enjoying the season.
Here’s where I’d start: think about the room where your quilt will live. Pick tree fabrics that feel at home there, then choose a background that lets them stand out.
That quiet background does important work. When the trees bring the color and pattern, the space around them keeps the whole quilt from feeling crowded. A busy background might be wonderful on its own—but here, it would be competing with your forest.
Think of it as decorating a room: not every corner needs an ornament.
And those “too pretty to cut” Fat Eighths you’ve been protecting like tiny fabric royalty?
They’ve had a lovely rest. Let’s give them a Christmas outing.
Happy stitching—and a little festive smugness,
Brigitte
