10 Easy steps to Sew a Headband and Pluses Quilt Along Week 4

August 31, 2022 Brigitte Heitland

Grab some scraps, a needle and thread and make one of these cute headbands for yourself or for a gift for someone special.

Headbands are a great way to keep your hair out of your face, but they're also really easy to make yourself. You can choose from any number of materials, from basic cotton and elastic bands to elaborate silk fabrics in beautiful colors.

I followed a YouTube tutorial of STITCHING POINT that shows each step in detail and here's how to make your own:

How To Sew A Fancy DIY Headband Using Your Scraps

What you need for this headband is a bit of leftover fabric, about a Fat Eighth, and a piece of an elastic band, about 1/2” wide. And here are the steps:

1.) Cut one fabric piece 16.5" x 5" and a second one 12" x 2".

You can use any fabric you want—I used quilting cotton for my headbands because I have more than enough of these scraps at hand, but you could also use some other fabric you have lying around, or even silk if you're feeling fancy. In fact, this project is so easy that there's really no reason not to make one up in every color of the rainbow! The only limitation here is your own imagination, so get creative and sew something bright and beautiful!

The length of my headband pattern pieces should fit most adult heads comfortably without being too tight. But feel free to adjust as necessary for any other size by adjusting either length or width accordingly.

2.) Now fold the larger fabric piece in half lengthwise, right sides together.

3.) Sew along the long open edges with a 1/4" seam allowance.

4.) Repeat for the other strip too.

5.) Turn both fabric tubes, so that the seam is hidden inside.

6.) Bring the seam to the center of the back of the larger tube and press with an iron.

You can skip this step for the thinner tube since the soon inserted elastic band will wrinkle it anyway.

7.) Get a piece of an elastic band about 6" long. Mine was about a 1/2" wide.

If you're using a thicker elastic band, you'll want to cut the smaller fabric tube wider, so that it fits around the width of your elastic band.

8.) Pull the elastic into the thinner fabric tube, making sure to secure the end so that it is well-fixed.

Now that you have the elastic in place, it’s time to secure it on its end with a couple of stitches.

9.) Join the thin fabric tube with the rubber pulled in and the wider fabric tube: you can see in the video exactly how the wide tube is folded over the thin one to hide the seam allowances.

You will sew over your seam allowances a couple of times, making sure they are completely secure. The final step of this process is to repeat this step also for the other ends of each piece so that you have both tubes connected to a ring.

10.) Hide the seam connections in the folds and Tataa, your hairband is ready.

Turn the folds of the connected parts, so the seam allowances are hidden inside the fold. Sew over the seam to fix it, but you don't need to sew over it many times.

Your hairband is now ready!

Add embellishments as desired!

Now that you're done sewing your headband, you can also add embellishments as desired! You can add buttons, beads, flowers, and other decorative items to your headband.

If you'd like a little bit more visual interest without making major changes to the pattern on your headband, try adding a bow or flower.

Headbands are cute and very easy to make yourself!

Headbands are a great way to show off your favorite fabrics and embellishments. You can make them as long or as short as you like, so they'll match whatever the desired size is. Headbands are also a great gift for your daughter, granddaughter, or anyone else who loves to have a bit of a fancy.

Conclusion

This is a great project to try out if you're looking for something that's easy and fun. I hope that you enjoyed making your own headband and I can't wait to see what you come up with!

If this post helped at all please share it with friends on social media and other blogs who might also be interested in sewing projects like this one.

You'll be ready for a beach trip or a weekend out with this headband. It will take less than an hour and you can use your fabric scraps!

Let me know in the comments, who will get the next headband you are going to sew
