Get Your Mitts on These: Sew Your Own Insanely Stylish Oven Gloves!

April 5, 2023 Brigitte Heitland

Who says oven mitts have to be boring? Spice up your kitchen game with these DIY oven mitts made with Zen Chic fabrics and sashiko stitching. Which one is your favorite? 🔥👨‍🍳👩‍🍳 #DIYovenmitts #kitchenhacks #ZenChicFabrics

Are you tired of boring oven mitts? 😴 Spice up your kitchen game with stylish and practical oven mitts that YOU make! 👊🏼
In this blog post, I'll show you how to create oven mitts that are both functional and fashionable using Zen Chic fabrics or by adding Sashiko stitching to plain fabrics. Who knew oven mitts could be so chic?! 😎

Why Make Your Own Oven Mitts?

Sure, you can buy oven mitts at your local store, but making your own is a great way to personalize your kitchen and create a unique accessory that is both practical and stylish. Homemade oven mitts also make great gifts for friends and family members who love cooking and baking.

When it comes to making oven mitts, you have a lot of creative freedom. You can choose fabrics that match your kitchen décor, experiment with different patterns and styles, and even add your own personal touches like Sashiko stitching or quilt-as-you-go designs.

Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Oven Mitts

One of the best things about making your own oven mitts is that you get to choose the fabric. Zen Chic fabrics are a popular choice among quilters and crafters, thanks to their bold designs and high-quality materials.

When choosing fabric for your oven mitts, it's important to consider both form and function. You want a fabric that is durable and heat-resistant, but also one that looks great and feels comfortable to wear. Zen Chic fabrics are perfect for oven mitts because they are made from 100% cotton and are easy to work with.

If you prefer a more minimalist look, you can also create oven mitts using solid fabrics with Sashiko stitching. Sashiko is a Japanese embroidery technique that involves using a running stitch to create a decorative pattern. Sashiko stitching is a great way to add a personal touch to your oven mitts, and it looks especially striking on solid fabrics.
For my oven mitts I did it with my domestic sewing machine. I drew some chalk lines first and then stitched along.

Hot hands, cool stitching! These oven mitts not only protect your hands from the heat, but also look stylish with intricate Sashiko stitching. Try your hand at creating your own with our easy-to-follow ideas on the blog. 🔥🧤🔥 #sashikostitching #ovenmitts #DIYfashion #kitchendesign

Tips for Making Oven Mitts

Now that you've chosen your fabric, it's time to start making your oven mitts. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Use a pattern: There are plenty of free and paid patterns available online for oven mitts. Choose one that fits your personal style and skill level. I used the paid pattern from Bombazine.

  • Use heat-resistant batting: When making oven mitts, it's important to use batting that is heat-resistant to protect your hands from burns. Insul-Bright batting is a popular choice among quilters and is readily available online.

  • Use a walking foot: When sewing thick layers of fabric and batting together, a walking foot can help keep everything aligned and prevent shifting.

  • Use a tight stitch length: A tight stitch length will help keep the layers of fabric and batting from shifting over time.

  • Add a hanging loop: Adding a loop to your oven mitts makes them easy to hang and store when not in use.

Creating Your Own Designs

If you're feeling creative, why not experiment with your own designs? I personally love using quilt-as-you-go techniques to create oven mitts that are both functional and beautiful.

For example, I was inspired by S.O.T.A.K handmade (see her oven mitt on the left) and created a pair of oven mitts using the Filigree fabric collection. The quilt-as-you-go method allowed me to create a unique design that was not only visually appealing but also practical for kitchen use.

In addition to quilt-as-you-go, you can also try your hand at sashiko stitching. I love the look of contrasting thread on a solid fabric, and it's a fun way to add some personality to your oven mitts. Don't be afraid to experiment with different stitch patterns and colors to find the perfect combination for you.

With so many options for creating your own designs, the possibilities are endless. And with the right tools and techniques, you can create oven mitts that are not only stylish but also functional.

So go ahead and give it a try! And if you're looking for more inspiration or guidance, explore Pinterest for free patterns and tutorials.
