Free pattern for sewing an iPad case and Moda Blockheads, Block 41

From cucumber to iPad case!

In this week’s blog post we feature the Chill Mochi Linen collection again. My friend Amaya (you can find her on Instagram here) used some yardage to make a cute and practical iPad case. We all want to protect our electronics. So why not do that in a good looking way?! The pattern is free and you can find it on the website of ithinksew (Update: unfortunately the free pattern was meanwhile removed. But you can find similar free tutorials/patterns here and here)

Let’s look at some practicalities. First of all, this iPad case is for a smaller iPad or tablet. Furthermore, it has 2 pockets on the front. One is a zipper pocket and the other one is a smaller open pocket. You can use those for your charger cable or earbuds, having everything together in one convenient place. Never ask yourself again, “where did I put my charger?”

By the way, have I told you before where I got the inspiration for this fabric with the oval dots? A lot of people often ask me where do you find inspiration? It happens in the most unexpected moments, really!

This is a funny one. You see, for this fabric, in particular, I was in the kitchen, slicing a cucumber. In the middle of it, you could see all those oval seeds which are together in one large row. I bet you have seen those before yourself. Those cucumber seeds gave me the idea for the black dots on this Mochi Linen fabric. What do you know, right? Inspiration strikes from the most unlikely places. This time it was a cucumber!

FREE QUILT ALONG BLOCKHEADS 2020
BLOCK #41
BACHELOR BUTTONS

As for Moda Blockheads, this week we go all the way to Australia as our host is Jen Kingwell from the land Down Under.

Jen has a very unique style that you can recognize instantly. She loves all kinds of scrappy quilts and she has a fabulous eye on how to combine scraps together. Another fun fact about Jen, most of her quilts are really time-intensive as they are hand-sewn! I think she prefers hand sewing to machine sewing. It amazes me that most of her quilts are completely made by hand.

Her special block called Bachelor Buttons is applique. That means you can make this block in a raw edge applique technique with fusible web, as I would do. Or you can use a traditional turn-over applique method. Which one is your favorite?

Make Some Cute Pincushions with a Handful of Scraps

When you keep making quilts, you keep ending up with lots of scraps. If you have only a handful of them, then these pincushions are cute, easy, and quick items to make. I found a free YouTube tutorial on how to make them. These pincushions are great to have in your own sewing space or to give away to quilting and sewing friends. You can even use the tutorial to make pumpkins to decorate your home for fall season.
