Confession: I once ignored a brand-new notebook for three whole weeks.
Not because it was full. Because it was empty.
A fresh notebook has this tiny air of superiority, doesn’t it? All glossy and pristine, like it’s about to judge your handwriting choices. Mine sat there in a colour best described as “insurance brochure,” quietly expecting Important Thoughts™. Every morning I reached for it. Every morning I… reached past it.
And then one afternoon — waiting for a seam to press, as you do — I did the thing quilters do when an object offends us just enough to deserve a makeover.
I covered it in fabric.
A plus, on purpose
The plus wasn’t even my idea first (I know, shock). It had been politely haunting me ever since I flipped through Suzuko Koseki’s Urban Quilts — calm, simple shapes, that beautifully recycled‑looking vibe, and those little crosses that had been living rent‑free in my brain for weeks.
So I grabbed Mira. Or rather: the scraps. The too-good-to-throw-away bits. A dark, quiet print for the background. One of those soft, linen‑y lights with tiny stitched crosses for the centre. And then one bold plus on the front — because a plus is the most honest shape I know: no front, no back, just here. now. hold still.
Four dark corners. Two light squares. One clean bar straight through the middle.
Twenty minutes. Three scraps. A small victory.
And honestly? Something slightly magical happened when I slid the cover onto that notebook.
The smugness was gone.
It didn’t look like it was waiting for my “best” handwriting anymore. It looked like it belonged to me — a little worn‑in before I’d even opened it.
I started writing in it that same day.
The quiet case for writing things down
Here’s what surprised me: the cover didn’t just change how the notebook looked. It changed how often I picked it up.
And once you’re picking it up… a notebook is generous. Mine has become half diary, half planner, half sketchbook — which is clearly too many halves, but that’s kind of the point. One morning it’s a brutally honest bullet list of what actually needs to happen today (short, realistic, and usually ignored by 2pm). The next it’s a colour combo I don’t want to lose, a half‑formed quilt idea, or one line about good coffee and very German weather.
Bullet journaling gets marketed like a productivity system — symbols, spreads, perfect little dots. But stripped right down? It’s kinder than that.
It’s just: slow down, notice what’s in your head, and put it somewhere safe.
Plan a little. Dream a little. Let the page hold it so you don’t have to.
A fabric cover won’t make you more organised. But it might make you reach for the notebook.
And reaching for it is the whole trick.
Make one this weekend
The best part: this is a true any notebook, any size project. Measure your book, add an inch, and the pattern does the rest. No zips. No drama. Nothing you can’t unpick if you change your mind (which… you might).
A mini charm pack or a fistful of Mira scraps is plenty — and a scrappy plus only looks better for being a little imperfect. (Ask me how I know.)
