Fun Weekend Project: A Minimalist Pillow

March 31, 2021 Nicole van Gremberghe

Take out your scraps box and show off your favorite fabrics

After working on a quilt or another sewing project, you usually have little strips and scraps left. You don’t want to throw them out because you love the fabrics and, well, you’ve paid for that piece too. So we save them and keep them in a box for a future project.

In between bigger projects

When you are in between quilts or you’re waiting for the Spring in Paris Quilt Along starting in April and you still want to play with fabrics, you’re going to look for smaller items to make. You could sew a nice phone case, a zippered pouch, or what about a boxy pouch?

Although these are lovely projects for a lazy Sunday afternoon, you want to make something different. But what? Sitting on your couch, it hits you. You want to make another pillow to accompany the cross stitch pillow and the plus block pillow you made earlier.

A fun little project

I have the perfect companion, the minimalist pillow. You can show your little bits and scraps of your favorite fabrics off in the focal point in this pillow. And you don’t need a lot of prints. Using a lighter background fabric will let them pop in the middle and on the corners. My friend and helper Sandra Schnathorst made the pillow for me using the fabrics from the new collection Dance in Paris.

What do you think? Fun project, right? The instructions for this minimalist pillow can be found in Love Patchwork & Quilting magazine (#78). The pillow is by Ashley Newcomb. She made pillows with this design but also a complete quilt. This particular one turned out light and modern.

Ashley also used the same pattern for another quilt she made and it was quilted by Rachel Hauser from Stitch in Color who happens to be one of our sponsors for Zen Chic’s Quilt Along which starts April 28.

While waiting for our Spring in Paris QAL

The minimalist pillow (and the other projects mentioned here) are perfect for passing the time while figuring out what you want to make next. I hope you’re considering joining us in our very first Spring in Paris Quilt Along.

In the meantime, have fun going through your box with little bits and scraps of your favorite fabrics. And if you post your Zen Chic projects on Instagram tag me (@zenchicmoda). I love to give you the love you deserve.

Happy quilting!

Joining hexagons can be a daunting and time-consuming task. Knowing how to do this properly using your sewing machine is a great skill to have under your belt. Watch the video tutorial by All People Quilt featuring the Day in Paris fabric collection.

Make Some Cute Pincushions with a Handful of Scraps

When you keep making quilts, you keep ending up with lots of scraps. If you have only a handful of them, then these pincushions are cute, easy, and quick items to make. I found a free YouTube tutorial on how to make them. These pincushions are great to have in your own sewing space or to give away to quilting and sewing friends. You can even use the tutorial to make pumpkins to decorate your home for fall season.

Sew Some Stylish Headbands of Leftover Fabrics
Sew Some Stylish Headbands of Leftover Fabrics

If you’re looking for an easy sewing project and you have a few leftover fabrics, I found a great little project for you. These cute headbands are very quick and easy to make. You could surely sew 5 or 6 of them within the hour, making these perfect for a quick gift to a friend. Or make yourself a couple matching your wardrobe. You don’t need much fabric to put a headband together and how fun will it be to complement that blouse you made earlier.
