How to Organize Quilt Ideas: From Creative Chaos to System (Without Losing the Magic)

February 4, 2026 Brigitte Heitland

"Where do you always get all these ideas?"

(Spoiler: My mind is not a place of quiet.)

Recently in one of my workshops, a participant asked me again this question I hear practically every day: "Where do you get all these ideas, Brigitte?"

I had to laugh. Because here's the thing: ideas? Not my problem. My actual problem is wrangling this wild avalanche of creative chaos, corralling it into something resembling order, and somehow – eventually – turning it into an actual quilt pattern that people can, you know, use.

✨ Welcome to my brain: it's like Pinterest on espresso.

When Post-its aren't enough anymore

I used to write my ideas on everything that wasn't nailed down:Notebooks, napkins, backs of shipping labels.

I had half a dozen sketchbooks, fabric samples in teacups, screenshots without names, and notes with cryptic words like "Curry+Turquoise+Cross pattern?".

Result: Creative chaos with romantic flair. But unfortunately, zero overview. So I built myself a system – not perfect, not glossy, but mine.

My digital idea nest

Today I have a fixed workflow for my ideas. I collect visually on

Pinterest (my absolute idea playground – feel free to follow me here ),

and then I sort & structure internally in Notion – not to show off technically, but to avoid constantly starting from scratch.

What I maintain there:

  • Project lists (next collection due on…)

  • Task lists (e.g. send fabric requirements to Sandi by Monday at the latest)

  • Moodboards by color moods (e.g., "Scandi meets Sorbet")

  • List of fabric ideas: What's missing, what would be new?

  • Mini brainstorms for patterns: Names, sketches, sizes and notes

  • AND: an "idea parking lot" where everything can land that isn't a task yet can land

I organise it in a similar way to the example shown in this Etsy template from ZoaAndSunshine.

But: I know not every quilter works digitally. So I've prepared something for you…

Your Freebie: The Quilt Project Planner

Because structure really makes creative life easier, I've designed a printable for you:

The Quilt Project Planner – a lovely, super-useful sheet for your next project.

DOWNLOAD YOUR QUILT PLANNER HERE

You can record there in totally analog fashion (with favorite ink and chocolate crumbs):

  • Fabrics & sources

  • Patterns & measurements

  • Notes & needed supplies

  • Even glue in small fabric samples or sketches!

Organization isn't a limitation – it's freedom

I firmly believe:

Creativity needs space – but also a bit of structure to grow.

When I know my ideas are safely stored, then my mind can dream again. Then a splash of color becomes a pattern. A Pinterest pin becomes a quilt. And a crazy 3 a.m. idea becomes a finished fabric.

Now it's your turn! 💬

How do YOU do it? How do you organize your quilt ideas?

Do you collect fabrics digitally? Do you sketch by hand? Or do you also have a little creative chaos with a system?

Tell me in the comments – I'm so curious about your tricks, tools, and favorite rituals!

Happy planning & dreaming,

– Brigitte x
